Despite the harsh realities of hyperinflation, Beirut's pulsating nightlife and constant influx of international visitors keep the city's urban landscape alive. An unparalleled economic crisis is intertwined with a spirit of resilience, adaptation, and survival in this city and throughout Lebanon.
Picture an average Beiruti worker in the year 2023. They are paid partially in US dollars and partially in Lebanese pounds. The USD component maintains its value despite rising inflation, providing a lifeline amid an otherwise turbulent sea of economic instability. The LBP part, however, presents a different picture.
With each passing day, they have less purchasing power thanks to their LBP. Food, shelter, and transportation are all experiencing price increases. The difficulty of making ends meet increases, despite the fact that some of the wages are paid in US dollars.
But in the city of Beirut, a very different situation is playing out. The hospitality industry appears to be booming as a result of an influx of tourists attracted by the advantageous exchange rate. It's a strange contrast to witness locals struggling to make ends meet while tourists appear to be oblivious to the country's economic woes.
Despite the financial boost from tourists' spending, business owners must tread carefully. Sustainability is in doubt as operating costs continue to rise and local consumer spending falls. Paying salaries in depreciating LBP and conducting business in US dollars may provide temporary respite, but they don't eliminate the risks of falling demand at home or losing employees.
This schizophrenic world is mind-boggling to the average person. Should they have to take on additional employment to provide for their families? Should they look for part-time work instead, despite the fact that it might take working two jobs to make ends meet? Finding stability in this upside-down economy is a constant uphill battle.
The story of hyperinflation in Lebanon is about more than just numbers. It's a story about the human spirit, told against the backdrop of a changing economy. It's a poignant reminder that behind every economic news story are actual people with actual lives. It's about people facing adversity and learning to make hard choices, adjusting, and holding on to hope.
